Mexico Attributes Mayor Assassination in Michoacan to Cartel Violence

(MENAFN) Mexico has attributed the assassination of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo Rodriguez to criminal syndicates operating in the western Michoacan state.

Senior security official Omar Garcia Harfuch stated Sunday that the mayor's murder during a Saturday evening public gathering stemmed from ongoing territorial disputes between competing crime organizations in the area.

Garcia Harfuch pledged to prosecute the perpetrators, revealing that Manzo Rodriguez had received protective security measures in December 2024, with enhanced safeguards implemented in May this year.

"Unfortunately, the attackers took advantage of the vulnerability of a public event to carry out the attack," he said.

Authorities neutralized the assailant at the location, he confirmed.

Michoacan, a leading agricultural region specializing in avocado cultivation and additional produce, has endured persistent violence connected to organized criminal networks, compelling federal authorities to station military personnel throughout the territory, the official noted.
